Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.

Law enforcement say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.

The substance had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement report initial examinations suggest the substance was probably human blood.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in connection with the event," they added.

City officials stated they were working "to unravel the case" and have requested to the residents for tips.

An important representative stated the incident made him speechless and needed to be resolved quickly.

"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right attack in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
